{"id":4831,"date":"2021-05-10T08:20:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T05:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.korpusprava.ru\/news\/2021\/05\/amnesty-reinstates-prisoner-of-conscience-status-for-alexei-navalny-jurist-news-legal-news-commentary\/"},"modified":"2021-05-10T08:20:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T05:20:45","slug":"amnesty-reinstates-prisoner-of-conscience-status-for-alexei-navalny-jurist-news-legal-news-commentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.korpusprava.ru\/en\/news\/2021\/05\/amnesty-reinstates-prisoner-of-conscience-status-for-alexei-navalny-jurist-news-legal-news-commentary\/","title":{"rendered":"Amnesty reinstates \u2018prisoner of conscience\u2019 status for Alexei Navalny JURIST \u2013 News \u2013 Legal News &amp; Commentary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img src=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/12\/Alexei-navalny.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Amnesty International on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2021\/05\/statement-on-alexei-navalnys-status-as-prisoner-of-conscience\/\">announced its decision<\/a> to re-designate Alexei Navalny, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s most prominent opposition critics, as a \u201cprisoner of conscience,\u201d apologizing for its decision to revoke his status earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Navalny, a lawyer and anti-corruption activist, is currently serving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2021\/02\/russia-court-sentences-activist-alexei-navalny-to-3-5-years-jail-for-violating-parole\/\">three-and-a-half year prison sentence<\/a>, which he received in February after he was found to have violated the terms of a parole. At the time of the violation, Navalny had been in Germany seeking medical help, having been the target of a chemical nerve agent attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2020\/09\/un-g7-leaders-call-for-investigation-into-poisoning-of-alexei-navalny\/\">allegedly sanctioned<\/a> by the Russian state.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Amnesty made an internal decision to revoke his status as a \u201cprisoner of conscience,\u201d citing concerns that certain discriminatory and xenophobic comments <span>he had made in 2007 and 2008 amounted to advocacy of hatred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Friday\u2019s statement, however, Amnesty said that this had been \u201cthe wrong decision.\u201d It said, \u201cAlexei Navalny has not been imprisoned for any recognizable crime, but for demanding the right to equal participation in public life for himself and his supporters, and for demanding a government that is free from corruption. These are acts of conscience and should be recognised as such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of this episode, Amnesty reports that it has commenced a review of its approach to the \u201cprisoner of conscience\u201d label, determining not to <span>exclude a person from this designation solely on the basis of past conduct. The statement continues, \u201cWe recognise that an individual\u2019s opinions and behaviour may evolve over time. It is part of Amnesty\u2019s mission to encourage people to positively embrace a human rights vision and to not suggest that they are forever trapped by their past conduct.\u201d However, Amnesty has emphasized that a designation as a \u201cprisoner of conscience\u201d does not imply an endorsement of the subject\u2019s views, commenting that \u201csome of Navalny\u2019s previous statements are reprehensible and we do not condone them in the slightest.
